Bishop John Fleming was delighted to welcome the Ukrainian Community to his home last week for a special service of prayer and remembrance to mark the First Anniversary of the invasion of Ukraine.
500 trees were planted to symbolise the welcome and inclusion of the Ukrainian people in Ballina and the Diocese of Killala. The planting of the trees will both aid and enhance biodiversity and symbolise the roots of the Ukrainian people in our community, and our desire to provide them with a loving welcome and the care and support they need to rebuild their lives. The trees will also be a sign of the enormous contribution the Ukrainian people are making to our local area.
The first tree was planted by Mariana Halyshyn and Bishop John Fleming, along with the Biodiversity Team Lead, Damian Barrett.
Bishop Fleming thanked all for their presence and commended the Ballina Clean-Up Community 2023 and the Biodiversity Team for their marvellous work and initiative on so many levels.
